Louisville Muhammad Ali International · SDF
SDF has the best connections of the three airports we serve, which is why a lot of guests end up flying into Louisville even when they're headed for Frankfort or Lexington. We meet you there so the drive east starts the moment you land.
Frankfort sits almost exactly between Louisville and Lexington, which gives you a genuine choice of airport. People often assume LEX is automatically right because it's nearer, then find the flights are awkward or expensive.
SDF usually has more options, more direct routes and better timings. It's roughly an hour west of Frankfort on I-64, and that hour is a straight, easy road — no mountain passes, no city centre, no tolls.
If your itinerary works better through Louisville, take it. The extra half hour of driving is almost always cheaper than the fare difference, and none of it is spent standing at a rental counter.
The 2027 Kentucky Oaks runs Friday 30 April, and the 153rd Derby on Saturday 1 May, with the Derby post time late in the day. Louisville that week is its own economy: rental cars sell out across the whole region, prices go vertical, and counters run out of vehicles regardless of what your confirmation says.
That last part catches people every year. A rental reservation is not a guarantee of a car — it's a guarantee of a place in line. A vehicle booked directly with a small operator who owns three cars and knows exactly where all of them are on 1 May is a materially different arrangement.
If your trip touches Derby week, book the vehicle before the hotel. It's the one week of the year where that's genuinely the right order.
Louisville is where a lot of Trail itineraries start before working east toward Frankfort, Lawrenceburg and Versailles. That is a driving trip from beginning to end.
Shelbyville sits between SDF and Frankfort, and a good deal of the corridor's business travel lands at Louisville. If Frankfort is your destination and the flights favour SDF, the drive is genuinely straightforward.
SDF is a UPS hub, which means unusual arrival and departure times are normal here. Late-night and early-morning landings are exactly when rental counters are least useful.
Three hours notice is enough for a normal booking. The exception is the first week of May — Derby week is the one time of year when booking early genuinely matters, so sort the vehicle before you sort anything else.
2025 Premier, seven seats, four-wheel drive. Room for a full party and their luggage, which matters on a Derby trip.
2026 2LT. If you're going to arrive somewhere in Louisville in May, arrive properly.
2020 GT Premium. The most-booked car we run, and comfortable over the hour east on I-64.
